Preparation for Alberta Conditions
Exterior painting in Edmonton means dealing with temperature swings, UV exposure, rain, and snow. We take this seriously. Our preparation process includes power washing, scraping loose paint, sanding, caulking gaps, and priming bare wood and problem areas.
We use exterior-grade paints and stains designed to withstand the local climate, and we schedule exterior work during appropriate weather windows to ensure proper adhesion and curing.
Built for Edmonton’s Freeze-Thaw Climate
Edmonton swings from −35°C winters to +30°C summers, and that freeze-thaw cycling is what destroys exterior paint — not age. Moisture works into hairline gaps, freezes, expands, and pops the film off the surface. The defence is preparation and timing, not a more expensive can of paint.
- Wash first. Dirt and chalking residue prevent adhesion, so every surface is cleaned before anything else happens.
- Remove what’s failing. Peeling and flaking paint gets scraped and sanded back to a sound edge — painting over failure just schedules the next failure.
- Prime bare surfaces. Exposed wood, metal, and patched stucco get the correct primer so finish coats bond permanently.
- Seal the gaps. Caulking joints around windows, doors, and trim keeps moisture out of exactly the places freeze-thaw attacks.
- Two finish coats. Full-coverage coats of quality exterior acrylic, applied in the right temperature window.
Stucco — the most common Edmonton siding — holds moisture and drinks paint, so it needs longer dry windows and more material. Vinyl and metal need products formulated to flex with rapid temperature swings. Wood needs the most prep and rewards it the most. Whatever your home is wrapped in, the season is short: roughly mid-May to late September. Quotes done in early spring get first pick of the calendar.
